March 21, 2016 celebrates world poetry day organized by the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO).
The day is to appreciate poetry, support poetry and poets, recognize linguistic diversity, additionally to promote global initiatives to inspire creativity in writing, reading, teaching, and to celebrate free speech in this artistic form.
“By paying tribute to the men and women whose only instrument is free speech, who imagine and act, UNESCO recognizes in poetry its value as a symbol of the human spirit’s creativity. By giving form and words to that which has none – such as the unfathomable beauty that surrounds us, the immense suffering and misery of the world – poetry contributes to the expansion of our common humanity, helping to increase its strength, solidarity and self-awareness.” Says Irina Bokova, Director-General of UNESCO.
So take this day to read a collection of poetry with family and friends, relish the imaginations and sentiments ignited by poetry. Share your favorite poems-better yet, try out a rhyme.
